Honolulu is the capital city of the state of Hawai'i, and one of the fastest growing urban areas in the USA. With renewed development, the city and its outlying rural areas, especially the north shore and windward side of the island of Oahu, are changing rapidly. Since living there in the mid-70's, the architecture and landscape has changed significantly.
Honolulu boasted a wonderful group of movie theaters constructed in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Some of the more famous, including the Waikiki Theatre have had some elements saved as part of new developments. Others, like the Varsity, adjacent to the University of Hawai'i, have recently closed and been demolished. We're thankful that the old Hawaii Theatre in downtown Honolulu has been saved for use by the Honolulu community.
